As a child I was obsessed with reading. As a teenager I authored an underground newsletter that was irreverent and fearless. As a young adult in my 20's I became a lawyer and turned to technical writing. As I matured into my 40's, I felt the call to come back to the wild. Whispering in the tiny spaces in-between courtrooms and kiddos…of the possibility of writing without boundaries or restrictions.
Then one day, a simple phrase from an old high school boyfriend on Facebook popped up in a chat box and the untamed writing began.
"Hey sweetheart,” he messaged. Minutes later a simple phrase would change my life forever. After exchanging platitudes and geographic locations (he was in Afghanistan) he typed, “remember hanging out at Todd Lang’s house watching Friday Night Flicks on the couch?
I audibly gasped because the whole idea of the book came rushing in with that simple phrase. Words falling in torrents so fast that I unconsciously covered my head with my hands to brace against the cascade. I have had years to think about that moment. How do you explain such a thing? It was as if I had given my idea to him in high school and he had held it safe. Kept it until I was ready. Ready to write with wild abandon.
Ready to abandon all of my fears.
Tad is now my husband and the love of my life. My muse. I'm also his caregiver and, together, we navigate all the unanticipated damage 22 years as an Army combat engineer can do — to the body and mind.
These novels are especially for him and the best friends he lost to the violence of war. I also write for my family - daughters I love deeply and want to always remember the strength they have inside. A son by marriage that I love and cherish and hope will always see how much he holds others together with the heart of a lion. And for my military family - friends for a lifetime that I hope will see themselves in the brave and loving characters and know how much their service and friendship means to me. And lastly, to the son who left our reality too soon. I hope my writing can help others see the infinite connections that survive everything.
Even death.
Nature is now our therapy and you can find us almost anywhere and everywhere as we travel in our RV with our three dogs and two cats. Dropping in on our kids, meeting new friends and healing old wounds.
